Character Bios

Since so much of my work is narrative and has a story behind it, I thought I'd create some small "bios" of my characters. They are all connected to one another by less than 6 degrees of separation. Not complete yet.

Balthazar

species: Brown Hyena

Balthazar is a prince of one of the royal families of Rhiyad. He was the youngest of seven sons and of course, great things were predicted for him. As a young man, he was a warrior and participated in the many battles that take place between the royal families of Rhiyad. He was strong and proud of himself. Even though he was most proud of his skills as a warrior, he was also a scholar, a strategist and writer. When a terrible iinjury puts him out of commission as a warrior, he focuses more on scholarly pursuits and over the years gets rather fat.

As a seventh son, he is reputed to have mild magical abilities. Many people feel that his ability to "see" the outcome of a battle are a form of pre-cognition. Balthazar would find these notions laughable, as he is a man of science and finds magic to be a silly idea.

Balthazar is a person of divided interests. He is very devoted to his work in the pursuit of knowledge and spends a good deal of time reading, experimenting and trying to understand the world around him. This aspect of him has always allowed him to hide from the fact that he feels that he's a defeated warrior and a less-gifted lover (an important aspect of Rhiyadian life). When he is reading, he is someplace else and the concerns of the world do not trouble him. He feel similiarly about battle plans and strategies. However, he can also be quite decadent. This is a carry-over from when he was a handsome warrior, a fully able lover and the kind of person who could eat what he wanted because his work burned off the fat. His injury left him walking with a cane and it really did hurt his pride.

Pictures of Balthazar I've drawn vary from his carefree earlier years, when he was a warrior and quite fit and handsome, to later in life when he's really rather fat. He never thins back down much, but at the same time, doesn't dislike what he's become. His lover, Najya, loves him as he is.

Cody

species: Bighorn sheep

Cody is a freshman at the same college as a few of my other characters. His major is undeclared. The truth is, Cody really doesn't care what he majors in. He's only going to school because his parents want him to go. Cody is in line to inherit a lot of money and tries to stay on their good side, doing just well enough in school to get by with average grades. He expects to take a posistion in his father's business when he graduates. His father would like him to get a Masters in business.

Consequently, Cody spends most of his time partying. He's bisexual and seductive. He's often selfish, caring more about his own pleasure than giving it to others. He enjoys seducing people and the process of seduction is fun and satisfying to him. It's the part he enjoys the most. He's the kind of person that doesn't spend the night. He usually sneaks out and walks home. (The walk of shame... but Cody likes it.) Cody enjoys his night-time walks. He enjoys looking at the stars and actually knows a lot about astronomy. He bought a small minor star near the Orion cluster and it's named after him. This is probably his most interesting personal characteristic and it's one that he shares with very few people.

Cody also enjoys sports and participates in the school's track team. Travel with the team to rival schools provides him with the opportunity for anonymous, gratutious sex. He loves it.

Cody's not a terrible person, he's just selfish. His private life is kept very private. Hin inner thoughts and dreams are his own and he doesn't share them readily. If Cody has a friend, it's Fajera, who is someone he's slept with, but also someone he can open up to occasionally. Their sex lives and their friendship are separate issues and not intertwined at all.

As time goes on, Cody gets into drugs and is disenherted by his family. He eventually gets into Narcotics Anonymous after being an addict for 5 years. His life turns around when he returns to his old college town. You can read the story in After 7.

Coke

species: Dog (Doberman)

Coke is a friendly person who likes to come off as tough and serious. It's all obviously bluster as anyone can see how sweet she is with her girlfriend, Layla. She's also the sort of person ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. She'll always stop when she sees a broken-down car on the road and always gives money to beggars.

She works in a restoration and body shop and loves restoring old cars and "pimping out" beat-up ones. Even though she works with cars 6 days a week, at home, she is often in the garage, working on her own projects. It's also the only part of the house Layla will let her smoke.

She and Layla both love to dance, drink and have a good time. While Coke's favorite music is rap and hip-hop, she also likes techno and house. So does Layla.

Coke also enjoys fixing things around the house, grilling in the backyard and is a secret enthusiast of Romance novels.

Her temper is a little short at times, and is prone to road-rage, shouting at traffic lights and getting into mild shouting contests with meter-maids and cops at speed traps.

More than anything else, she loves Layla with all her heart, and tries to please her as much as possible. When she drives, she doesn't swear or speed when Layla is in the car. When they are at home together, she cooks for Layla and loves massaging her back and rubbing her feet. Basically, when it comes down to it, Coke would do anything for Layla. Her love is pure and sweet.

Fajera

species: Arabian Oryx

Fajera is from the Rhiyad Empire. She lives near a large college and works as liason for foreign students from Rhiyad, a large country in my imaginary world. She speaks several languages fluently and her work brings her in contact with many different kinds of people from all levels of society. Fajera is the kind of person who is comfortable with all people and becomes well-liked universally through her classy and pleasant demeanor.

Fajera is a hard worker who enjoys her career. As diplomatic relations between Rhiyad and the analogue of the US that Fajera lives in are often strained, her work is different every day with many challenges to deal with. This is what Fajera likes: challenge.

Since Fajera isn't exactly a teacher, or staff at the college (her posistion is independent of the school, yet closely tied to it), she has been known to become involved with the students. Sex in Rhiyad is treated differently than in the US analogue. Rhiyad is a country where royalty and rich men and women keep harems and to be part of a harem is a priviledge that leads to greater rewards later in life. Sex among unmarried people in Rhiyad is casual. Married men and women may have more than one wife/husband. Fajera's attitude towards sex is therefore very loose, open and to the outsider, casual. However, Fajera respects sex and enjoys it like some people enjoy good food. She is an "omnivore" of sex, enjoying nearly all its healthy permutations and variations.

Fajera has developed a special relationship with Cody, who she knows both through college and through his parents. His parent's business is an import/export business bringing in specialty goods from the "exotic" country of Rhiyad to the US analogue.

Fajera's name mean's "wicked" in Arabic. A a child, she was a trouble-maker. However, today, she is a mature woman with an important job and a true love of both the desert country of Rhiyad and the US analogue. I should also mention that she is very kind and a terrific listener.

Irving

species: Dragon

Irving is a very no-nonsense kind of guy. He does everything thoroughly and with his whole heart, including loving Snowdrop. His love is so complete that he is able to share Snowdrop with others and not be angry or jealous. He knows that in the end, Snowdrop loves him and will come back.

Both Snowdrop and Irving are Rangers in the country of Hispera. It is their job to make sure that natural life in Hispera is balanced and healthy. The job is a difficult one, but extremely rewarding. Maintaining balance in a complex ecosystem is not only an enormous challenge, but also one of great responsibility. Everyone in Hispera remembers the 50-year Shadow.

In their off-seasons, both Irving and Snowdrop are allowed to travel to other countries in the World and enjoy visiting the States most. Irving does not enjoy the States as much as Snowdrop, but goes because Snowdrop loves the trips to the States.

He is a man of few words. He is strong in both character and body. Irving is vigilant, observant and completely loyal and devoted to Snowdrop and his work.

Jack

species: Muntjac deer

Jack is the "brains" part of a criminal team that includes Zephyr. Jack is incredibly smart, devious and deep down, a decent person. He loved Zephyr the moment he saw him and as times goes on, they become closer.

Jack plans the crimes. He is the mastermind. He has great computer skills, is a good hacker and downplays his skills to most people. At first glance, he seems to be be no more than a scruffy bar-hopper. He lets people underestimate him. In the criminal world, his skills are widely known and he is respected for his mind, plans and creative heists.

Jack isn't his real name. He won't reveal his true name to anyone, not even Zephyr. He often says he's from the States and variously cites Windy City and City of Angels as his original home. Like Zephyr, he now lives in Mare Imbrium in the country of Luna on the Moon.

Jasmine

species: Spotted Hyena

Jasmine is a very smart woman. She's a math major and when she gets to talking about her field in math, usually looses everyone in the room. She's also a cheerleader on the Varsity team and is a blackbelt in Karate. Her formidable skills both in academics and otherwise mark her as an unusual student. She's fun-loving and sure of herself. She loves going to bars, hanging out and talking to folks. And while she loves talking about her field of study, also enjoys talking about the latest movies and music, her favorite types being jazz and rap.

She's a little bit of a loner though and hasn't made any fast friends in a long time. Her relationships are generally superficial, but she'd like to find someone who cares about her very much. To attend this college (which many of my other characters attend), she's come a long way, as she lives on the other side of the country. Her family is very supportive of her academic endeavors and are very proud of her.

She knows Ogun and Vince by acquaintance and frequents Vince's bookstore often. The two of them enjoy talking about science fiction and Vince is one of the only people that will sit and listen to her talk about theoretical structures of topology withougt interruption. He doesn't understand, but he enjoys listening. :)

Jasmine needs someone in her life and is looking primarily for a boyfriend. She's had bisexual experiences in the past, but would really like to find a man who she can respect and who can respect her and her goals.

Kiefer

species: Dog (Chow-chow)

Kiefer is an actor and stand-up comic. He often appears in "big & tall" commercials and has appeared several times as "Crazy King Max" the car salesman. His stand-up routine involves his experiences as a commercial actor, gay-fur, and immigrant to the States. He's excited about being asked to be part of a stand-up comedy special on the Comedy Channel on Cable TV.

Kiefer grew up in Western Europe (an area like the Bayern of Germany) with Meyer and they were long-time friends before they were lovers. Their relationship is very close and should the laws in the States ever change, they'd get married. Since things are still rather conservative, they've had a "vow-exchanging" ceremony and made it a huge bash with food catered by Meyer's restaurant.

Kiefer is friendly, outgoing, loves to eat, drink and party. As much as he loves being the center of attention, he loves quiet time with Meyer the most. When he's not working, he's at Meyer's restaurant, helping Meyer keep his books in order and even helps out as a waiter when Meyer's short on staff. He has a keen interest in math and accounting, which few people know and is the one that files Meyer's taxes and keeps Meyer in the black, bookwise. He's audited math and business classes at the university, but refuses to get a degree.

Both Meyer and Kiefer became citizens of the States last year and since it was another opportunity to party, threw a huge bash celebrating that success as well. ;)

Kiefer is German for "barrel maker."

Layla

species: Dog (Saluki)

Layla is a paralegal working for the city's District Attorney's office. It's a tough job with long hours, but Layla enjoys being part of the process of justice, therefore it is very rewarding.

Since much of Layla's job is very serious, she loves to unwind with her girlfriend, Coke, as much as possible. Coke is very sweet to her and makes this very easy. Together they go to movies, have outdoor barbeques and talk about their favorite Romance novels (Layla's passion and Coke's secret).

Layla drives a "pimped-out" car that Coke designed. It's sleek and black and is the envy of the District Attorney's office. She's proud of Coke's work and is proud of the car.

At home, Layla likes to decorate and often works on "improving" their house. She sews very well and has made all of their curtains and is currently working on a quilt that features both her and Coke, Grandma Moses style, doing all of the things they love doing, both toghether and apart.

Layla loves Classical music and has dragged Coke to many performances at the Symphony (Coke only goes because she loves Layla). But she also loves Techno. The 2 of them go clubbing rather frequently and both are excellent dancers.

Layla met Coke when she had to get body work done on her car when it suffered an extreme fender-bender. It turned out they'd both gone to the same high school (even though they didn't know each other--Layla was 2 grades ahead of Coke). They began to talk, became friends, then lovers over time. Now they own a house together. Layla would love to have children in the future, but as they are both still rather young, is going to wait a few years. She can't imagine her life without Coke anymore and feels that their meeting and falling in love is the best thing to happen in her life.
